The NDAA Misty Centre

The NDAA Misty Centre is our original local animal rescue centre, on the edge of Barnstaple. Now we have our special care unit, but the Misty Centre lives on as a special place of refuge for the county’s rescued animals.

For years, when Devon residents thought about the North Devon Animal Ambulance, they thought about Misty the pony. Misty gave his name to our original rescue centre. Sadly, in 2008, he fell ill at the age of 40. Despite lots of love, care and pain relief, his quality of life waned. Reluctantly, we decided to let him rest pain-free and at peace. There will never be another Misty.

Misty delighted everyone

Misty may be gone but he’ll never be forgotten as he lives on through our rescue centre. He was an amazing pony who did extraordinary things for the community during his long life.

Misty was involved with our work since the charity was formed. He delighted children and adults alike at events across North Devon. During his life, he starred at fetes, fayres and hospice visits He was even guest of honour at Christmas carol services for the Children's Hospice South West.

He inspired thousands of people since being rescued and welcomed into the NDAA fold. He even appeared at supermarkets, including Tesco. And he always worked tirelessly to promote our rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work.

The Misty Appeal

In 2003, Misty helped us raise tens of thousands of pounds. He was the unforgettable figurehead for the North Devon Journal's fundraising to generate money to build our first animal rescue and treatment centre.

Within weeks of the appeal’s launch, generous Devon residents exceeded our initial target. Spurred on by our reputation for committed voluntary work and for spending ALL funds raised on local animal care, they devised their own schemes to help the appeal exceed its target. The result was a specially designed treatment and recovery centre for domestic birds, cats and other small animals – the Misty Centre.
